fipresci london critics baftas oscars shadows awards 13th Online Film Critics Awards

Nominations 31 Dec 09 • Awards 6 Jan 10

Notes by Rich: As usual, the online critics nominees are an intriguing mix that feels like a bunch of fanboys trying to predict Oscar. How else can we explain the intense love shown for the likes of Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker alongside nods to Watchmen, Star Trek and District 9? Even so, there's also a clear critical bent in here, seen in the heavy presence of the Coens' A Serious Man and loved-but-ignored performances from Tilda Swinton and Joaquin Phoenix. Sometimes when I cast my votes here and then read the nominees I feel like a voice in the wilderness (the foreign category is especially offbeat). And even if the winners' list tends to be a bit more mainstream, at least some off-centre nominations keep things interesting...
