fipresci london critics baftas oscars shadows awards 17th Online Film Critics Awards

Nominations 8.Dec.13 • Winners 15.Dec.13

Notes by Rich: The Online Film Critics Society was established in 1997, and is now part of the mainstream awards season. Members come from all over the world, but the predominantly American membership is starting to give way to more global critics, as evidenced by some quirky nominations and a new list of the 10 best non-U.S. releases. This year's other odd touches include Drug War in Film and Foreign Film categories and the strong showing for The Wind Rises everywhere (neither film has been released in Britain, so UK-based critics haven't seen them). Predictably for a body that centres on web-based writers, Gravity scooped up three key awards (plus a special one), but 12 Years a Slave held off the challenge for the top prize.
