bafta
Nominations Fri 9 Jan 15 • Awards Sun 15 Feb 15

Notes from Rich: Once again, Bafta nominations are most notable for the surprising snubs peppered throughout the shortlists. Most astonishing is the absense of Mike Leigh's Mr Turner from the main categories, including Cannes-winning actor Timothy Spall. This hints that voters were trying to go mainstream again, ignoring local favourites whole falling for the buzz. Other surprising omissions are nominations for big movies with British cast members, including Selma, Unbroken and Into the Woods. Plus nothing for A Most Violent Year. And the rising star category continues to be a joke (amid solid names, Robbie hasn't been in a film all year while the previously Oscar-nominated Woodley couldn't really rise any higher). But then Bafta members are notorious for getting a lot of things right. Of the winners, there's pointed love for The Lego Movie, Ida and Pride. While Mike Leigh's Bafta Fellowship proved to be the highlight of the ceremony: he pulled no punches.
